RE HELENSVILLE POST OFFICE
(TO THE EDTTOii.)
Sir,—ln your last issue Mr Rea, in his evident desire to depreciate Mr James McLeod and all his works, makes use of. the new Post Office movement—which is now ancient history—to score at MrMcLeod's expense. If it were not that I know Mr Rea to be quite mistaken, and his comments en Mr McLeocl's attitude re the proposed site to be unjust to Mr McLcod, I would not liavo troubled you to pub. lish this. As the prime irovflr in obtaining tlvo grant, of having the Pest Office built on the present site, and, what was the most difficult and important part of the business, the long un> seen battle by correspondence with the Government to induce Sir Joseph Ward to actually expend the grant on the building, it is only na'ural that I should know more of the matter than most people. At the time referred to by Mr R«a, I got up a petition and obtained signatures oi noarlj all the rcsiiJeuts of the town including four then members of the Town Board. Mr McLeod was then proprietor of the Terminus Hotel, and Avhen I asked him for his signature he gave it willingly, stating at the same time that he thought the sit-1 proposed by me was an exceedingly fair position tor both ends of the town. Subsequent to this, Mr McLec.d m Chairman of the Boaid, assisted in bringing pressing persuasion to I oar upou our late member, Mr Stallwo; thy, to got the grant expended. Inm "at a loss to understand Mr Ren's st;iteiuxa.ts i v this matter for 1 feel sure that he cannot be unaware of &Q above facts. i KOMrs in fairness, 0 Laßocmk,
