HELENSVILLE RACING CLUB.
The anmial meeting of the Helonsville Racing Club was held on tho Te Makiri Course on Friday afternoon last. The weather was ideal for rac^ ing 1, and there was a fair attendance. Owing to the short notice there were very few passengers by the special train arranged by the Club from Auckland, but there was a good attendance of the local public with a number from the northern districts. The racing on, the whole, was good, especially the local races, (the Maiden Handicap and the Hot Springs Handicap) having 6 and 8 starters respectively; Mr F. Dye's Miss Pauline winning the double with Mr J. Flynn's Miss Rena second in both events. The four open events brought out only small fields and were won by outside horses, the local owners scratching their horses as being outclassed with the weights. Mr S. Wilson's Fuss accounted for the Helensville and the Empire Handicaps; Haku for the Publican's Purse, and Don Q,uex for the Flying Handicap. Considering the time the committee had (less than a month after leceiving the permit) to get things into order, the arrangements were all carried out successfully and the course was fairly easy. The officials : Mr J. A. Wilson (judge), Mr ,Tno. Kavanagh (starter), Mr Jno. Stewart (clerk of scales), Mr E. 0. MeLeod (clerk of course;, Mr Gr, Willis (assistant secretary), Messrs Tucker and Coulter (handioappers), Messrs Hill and Tucker (timekeepers), and tho energetic secretary, Mr Jas. Hand gave satisfaction in their differ-, ent positions, assisted by the stewards.
The Course, which is on Mr Jas. Hand's property, is the making of one of the best race tracks in the North, being surrounded on one side by a terrace from which the whole of the races can be seen, and the river rounding along the back, and if the Club can get a totalisator license for future meetings, there is no doubt but that Helensville would have a good race meeting once a year, being the centre of a large and growing district and also so convenient to Auckland and the North by rail, and in easy touch with the Wairoa by steamer, Mr J. Cain supplied the refreshment booth on the ground, and there were several side shows which were patron, ised between the races. A dance was held in the evening in the Foresters' Hall and was largely attended, a very enjoyable evening being spent. The music was supplied by Misses Little and Donovan. Following is the icsult of the ' events: — MAIDEN HANDICAP a G soys: second horse to receive 1 sot. out of stakes. For local horses, within 10 mile radius, that have never won a race.
