Mr Jas. Mclntyrp, of Te Pua, was we are sorry to hear, badly kicked on the knob by a horse on Saturday last, necessitating his removal to the local hospital, where Dr. Meinhold inserted five stitches
The election of a Licening Committee for the District of Kaipara will take place at the soveral polling places advertised in our columns, on Tuesday, March 12th. The number of nominations are 9, and only five are required for the committee. Mr S. Ure.Macaulay is the Returning Officer.
The Organ recitals given by Mr W. T. Sharp, of Auckland, in Helensville on Monday evening, and Para. kai on Tuesday, in aid of the Presbyterian Church, were, owing to tho bad weather, only poorly attended. Mr Sharp will play at Woodhill this evening. A report will appear next week.
A man from down South who has been touring the North Island waxed enthusiastic over the piospects of the inland towns of the North Island as compared with those in the South Island. Said he :•' Your country towns are absolutely foiging ahead, while those in the Souch Island are dead."
We were shown a 5 guinea cup procured to order by Mr Laird f jeweller, for the Sports to be held at Wark* worth on Easter Saturday. The cup which is on a mahogany stand is prettily chased and is 10 inches high apart from the stand, Mr Laird is also supplying several medab and trophies for the same Sports. An accident happened to an Austrian named John Bacicu at the railhead, Kaiwaka, on Monday afternoon. He was on the engine engaged at the works, when he lost liis balanco and fell on to the line. A wheel of the engine passed over his foot, completely severing it. Bacicu was brought to the Auckland Hospital the same afternoon by special train. At the Harbour Board meeting on Friday notice of motion was tabled to the effect that the Board rescind its previous resolution to promote a bill to raise a loan of £250,000 for harbour improvement, and that it takes steps to raise £100,000 instead. This means the temporary abandonment of the big scheme at the heads. The new loan would be used for the purchase of a dredge to deepen the river channel to the town. Dr, G, Marchesini left Auckland for Helensville by motor car on Friday last to conduct an urgent operation. The trip was a very rough one. Deciding to return by wav of Waiwera and Devonport, the doctor found the roads so bad that he could not proceed beyond Waiwera At Waiwera tho sea was very heavy, anil the first steamer made no attempt to approach the wharf. Dr, Marchesini was thus compelled to posfpone his return to Auckland till Mouday, We take the following from the "Fosf report of the Waitemata County Council meeting:—Or, Mc« Leod'a trouble has been to gee a new Swing bridge erected at Helensville on the boundary line between Town Board and County. He has exercised great forbearance and reported that the meeting at Hfilensville broke up in uproar. The Chairman of that meeting refused to put a motion that the control of the bridge be left to the County and that the Board pay half cost of erection. Or. McLeod now wished to have the position defined. The Clerk : You can get an order in Council declaring who is the controlling authority. Or. McLeod : If the old bridge breaks down the people on the M.iiietahi side are blocked. Helensville is alright as they have the rail and river. He favoured the County being the the controlling body, and moved that the Government be asked to vest the badge in the County, and failing an amicable arrangement with Heleusville, the Government be asked to appoint a commission 1o apportion the cost and Upkeep between both bodies. A girl is wanted for the 'Advertiser' Office. , Mr. E. S. Masters, storekeeper,-, while off-loading groceries at the old wharf, Helensville South, on Monday, had the experience of fishing\ for his horse and cart and quantity of goods. It appears there were two carts unloading at the wharf, and one in attempting to pass in front of Mr Masters' turnout, brnshed against the horses nose and' started it backing with the result that the horse, cart and contents went over the edge of the wharf into the river. Mr Masters eon- ; tented himself hy saying "it might |=Have been worse." */; MrGKN. Hayes, solicitor, of Darvgavilla, announces himself as a eandil date for election to the Kaipara Licensing Bench. He has refused to associate himself with any party, and submits himself to the confidence of the electors on the single and simple promise that if elected he will do his best to faithfully and impartially administer the licensing law. Mr Hayes holdtfthat the position of a member of a licensing bench being a judicary one, it is not the correct thing for a member to.be pledged to either the temperance or thu liquor sides. It is haraly necessary to say that Mr Hayes is well and favourably known, and that his legal training should make him a useful member of the committee.
