HELENSVILLE SWIMMING CLUB
The Helensville Hot Springs Swimming Club held their second Carnival in the Springs Swimming Bath on Friday, evening-, when, not withstand" ing the threatening state cf the weather, there was a fair number present. Owing to other attractions in Auckland thore weie no amateurs present from the City Clubs, but the programme submitted was a good one and all the events were well contested. The drying events; especially the Neat Header and Long Dive, were real good, while the Breast Stroke event was an excite ' ing race, being won by Gr. Nicholls (6 sees.) by a few inches from F. Le- • Grrice (ser). -The open handicap of ', 90yds, won by Gr. Avey, showed that j. swimmer has a fair speed, winning. easily, he did the distance in lm. 13. " 2-sth sees, The Nightdress and Candle Kace, as usual, caused some amusement, and was won by the old , v.eteran, W. Harris; while the Rtilay race between Helensville and Farkhurst, won by the latter was well fought-out. & L^:": The handicapping, carried out^oy Messrs ,Harnmond and Stringer, gpCve, good finishes and satisfaction. Messrs Jas. McLebd _ and Stringer (judges), Lambert and "Card (starters), and Gh Willis and Tui McEwin (secretaries), carried out their duties well. The secretaries deserve credit for the arrangements of the Baths, and wo think it is time now, that as thesa functions are likely to be held quarterly, that the Domain Board should procure proper lighting conveniences, as the only lights procurable are inadequate and greatly mar the efforts of those who are running these Carnivals. As the Domain Board get a share of the profits, it is but right that they should consider the proper lighting of the Baths.
The next Carnival will be held in about three months time1, when there will be some. Champion Amateur swimmers from Auckland taking part, There are a number of swimmers in the district who should show more in*' terestin these Carnivals, being got up for the improving of the art. A number seem afraid to enter the different events, although, they swim strongly, . but they will never find out what they can do until they enter into contests with others. We hope t to see a lot of fresh swimmers taking part in the . next Carnival. .Following are the results of the ' different events:—' Youth's Race Handicap, 18 and under, 4 starters : J..
