SWIMMING CARNIVAL.
The Helensville Hot Springs Swimming Club were unfortunate to strike such a wild evening as Friday last for the first ''Carnival of the new Club, and although. there was a good attendance the inclement weather must have kept a number away and somewhat marred the enjoyment of those present. The programme of eight events arranged by the committee was augmented by the presence of two members of the Waitemata Swimming Club, Mr W. R. Hortbn, breast stroke champion of Auckland, and Mr A. O'Hare, 72 yards champion of Auckland, and runner up. for the New Zealand Championship, who gave exhibitions in 3 methods of life saving. Mr Horton also gave an exhibition in different styles of swimming, viz., crawl tstroke, trudgeon stroke breast stroke, over-arm,^stroke, nndback stroke ; and Mr O'Hare gave a speed turn of 30 yards (2 lengths of the bath) which he^£r complished in 17secs. fjjHP items evoked much iriteresx^md the exhibitors were s much applauded. In the 90 yards Handicap, O'Hare conseded s"secs. to G. Avey, beating him after a good bout by a couple of strokes, doing the distance in 60 sees; Avey swimming well against Aucklands champion. Horton competed in the breast stroke event of 75 yards giving J.
