ELECTIONS.
The Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) stated in Ohristchurch .on Saturday morning that polling day in connection with the general election and licensing issues was fixed for Tnuraday, December 7, and this date would not clash with any show or other of fixtures importance in the Dominion.
Mr uurdon Coatee, Independent candidate for Kaipara seat, opened his campaign at Paparoa on Monday night. He said he was not ihe organ of the Opposition, he came before them purely as an Independent. His committee consisted of both Oppositionists and Government supporters >ie wanted to refrain from personalities in this campaign. He stood for Liberalism in its true form, Government for the people by, the people. He did not stand for the monopolist. He had supported the Liberal Government in the pa 9 r, but there were features in the present administration which were not in tha interests of the people. The Government at present was too slow. Mr Coates went on to say there was no doubt New Zealand was prosperous, but the public debt exceeded £80.4)00.000 and he was opposed to indiscriminate borrowing. He said as regards the land question he was a freeholder to the backbone. He quoted instances 6t a freehold sys. tern. The Kaipara District, was an" example where the Government had allowed valuable lands to slip throuoh their fingers, land which ought to have been secured and sold to the worker He wanted to seethe tradesmau and worker on the land He beleived in grants being made from the consolidated fund to County Councils ihe system should especially be used where crown lands have been opened up.
