THE Kaipara Advertiser. AND WAITEMATA CHRONICLE. WEDNESDAY, OCT. 4, 1911. HELENSVILLE HOT SPRINGS.
Another Ministerial promise ! now many promises does it take to move a j a Kaipara Train ? That is the <juestion, which we leave to our readers to I ponder over. We thank Mr Poole, M.P. for Auckland West, for his advocacy of the development of Helensville as a. touriac and health resort, fur which he received tt promise from the Hon. Mr Mackenzie, Minister in charge of Tourist Department, "that the matter would have attention." Speaking on the Tourist Department Estimates Mr Poole said: "Many people from Auckland would go to Helensville if bettor- provision was made ior taking the curative waters. He (Mr Poole) could not congratulate the Minister on the speed of the Helensville train, it was a disgrace the way the train loitered on the line. The cowcatcher should be on the guard's van. The Depaitment should encourage week-end trips to Helensville." Mr Poule has been to Helensville; ho has travelled on-the North Auckland Main Trunk N.Z. Government Express," and therefore knows that it crawls through dairy country, as can be easily seen, when he points out that the " cowcatcher " is on the wrong end. He also knows that the curative waters to be had at Helensville are as gcod as any in the Dominion, and that with a proper train service many people, especiallv those of moderate means, from the City could have the benefit of the Springs at very little cost, and the loss of very little time, and does not miss an opportunity to put in a plea for Helensville when the opportunity offers, and we hope that, the Minister will carry out his promise, and do something in the mattei.
Speaking on Advertising Tourists Resorts, the Hon. Mr Mackenzie said '•£2OOO per annum was beino- ex* pended in advertising the tourist resorts of the Domini on." Does Helensvilie come within the " Advertised Tourist Beaorts?" Whether or not it w tinae it tad sa adequate tima »&-
vice which would help considerably to advertise its curative waters, for their quality and nearness to the Northern City would be sufficient, for the time being. JTon. T. Mackenzie says "Botorua is doing very well just now, and so he was glad to say, is the Tourist Department generally; and the fact that we are receiving from £ 1.500 to £1,600 a jear as commission ou tickets we sell, will also go towards assisting the Department." Eotorua may suit those that can afford to go there, but there are thousands who would benefit by using our mineral waters who cannot afford to go to either Rotorua or Te Aroha, but given a moderately fast train service, could visit Helensvillo and receive the benefit of the thermal waters, returning to Auckland in a few hours at a moderate cost. Not only would tourists like to try the waters but there are numbers in our city who would greatly benefit by a visit to the Helensville Hot Springs if our " Progressive Government " would bring it within their reach.
