FOUND DROWNED.

About 3. 30 p.m on Monday afternoon, Mth inst the police were informed that Messrs Tubv and John-

son, (Fisherman of Helensville.) who were going down the river in their launch had discovered the body of a drownod man in the mangroves about a mile and a half away from the wharf, Constable Driscoll at once set out with the fishermen in their launch which had returned on making the gruesome discovery, and with their assistance remo7ed the body which had apparently been in the water for some" considerable time, to the Court House, Helensville. The deceased who was well clothed, and was wearing a serge suit, light macin* tosh, light boots, and galoches, and had a silver watch and metal chain small note book, pursp with few silver coins in, box of matches wrapped in a piece of newspaper dated May 17, kuife and a few minor articles in his pockets.but there was nothing with which the Police could form any clue as to his identity. Re was a well built man and would be about oft lOiins in height, of. middle age with da"k hair and moustache and well preserved teeth.

An Inquest on the bod}? of the un* known deceased was held iii the Oourt House, yesterday afternoon, loinst beforo th* Coroner, "W. Kyall Fosbroke, Fsq., and a Jury consisting of W. A. Laird, D. P., ,Mclntjro. A. Nobel, G, W. McEwin, i\ Tucker, and W. 13. Card (foreman.)

Alter Constable Driscoll had informed the Jury as to the circum-, stances of the finding of the body and that ho had searched deseased without finding anything to indentify him. the Jury viewed the remains.

Augustus Tilby and William Johnstone gave coroborative evidence as to finding the body aboii t a mile and a half down the river, on the baa* at high water mark.

Dr Meinhold, sworn, stated he had held a post-mortem examination of deceased. The body was that of a middle aged man, with dark hair and moustache, and well preserved tec ill. There were no m irks of violence on the body. The body must have been in the water for over four weeks, yerhaps two or three months. From the high state of decomposition it was impossible to find the actual cause of death.

At this stage Constable Driscoll asked for an adjournment that beinoall the evidence he had, and he wisiv ed to make further inquiries.

The inquest was adjourned until Monday, August 21st at 11 am.
