E. Richardson. Wellington, December 14, 188 G.

The annual meeting of the Borough Council for the installation of Mayor was held at the Town Hall to-day at noon. Mr Henry Burger, who had been reelected to the position, made the usual declaration, and received Hie coiuTptulations of the councillors present. Under "Ihe Railways Construction and Land Act, 1881," sections 17 and 18, it is required that whenever any com-

pany has entered into a contract under this Act, "it shall cause the middle line and direction of the railway to be set forth on a plan and described in a book of reference, showing the land required to be taken for the same, and the names of the owners and occupiers of such lands so far as they can be ascertained. Copies of every plan and book of reference mentioned shall be deposited in some public place in each borough (if any) in the district within which the railway is intended to be constructed, and at such other places as the Governor may determine." In accordance with the foregoing, it is notified that copies of the plan and book of reference relating to the section of the East and West Coast Railway lying between Brunnerton and the Big Hohonu River has been deposited at the office of the County Council, Greymouth, and are open to public inspection, free of charge, during the usual office hours at those places. We remind intending sub-contractors that the tenders for the erection of 34,000 cubic yards of earthenwork and about 700 yards of retaining wall for the Midland Railway contractors close on Saturday next, the 18th inst.

Messrs M'Keone, Robinson, and Avigdor, the contractors, to-day also invite tenders for forming the railway from the junction with Christchurch and Nelson lines to Arnold Creek, a distance of about 4£ miles. The work will be divided into two contracts, and tenders must be given for each contract separately. Plans and specifications can be seen on and from December 20 at the office, Werita street, Greymouth, where tenders are to be addressed, and will be received, up to the 20th January.

Tenders are invited for the purchase of a fifth share in Netzband and party's claim at Mignonette Flat. The claim is connected with the No. 2 channel. Tenders close next Wednesday, 22nd inst. They are to be addressed to Mr A. Foldi, Dillman's Town.

Tenders for the purchase of an extended claim, the removal and re-erection of a water-wheel and tank, and for the sale of booths for the Christmas sports, close tomorrow.

The Argus reports that Mr William Chesterman, a very old resident of the Greymouth district, comes back by the Rosamond, after divers wanderings in North Australia during the last six months. As William has something of the constitution of a salamander, it could not alone be the hot climate of the tropics that has sent him back to the moist and equable temperature of the West Coast. His case is another realisation of the old saying that "Distance lends enchantment to the view."

The mother of Caffrey, accused of the Great Barrier murder, was fined at Auckland yesterday morning for drunkenness. The Hon. L. L. Smith, the "sporting doctor," as his friends dub him, has re" turned to Victoria from Iris trip to Europe. He saw the English Derby, and says it is not a "circumstance" compared to the Melbourne Cup, and that the English people are a hundred years behind Australia in racing matters.

Remedy for Hard Times.—Stop spending so much on fine clothes, rich food, and style. Buy good food, cheaper and better clothing, and stop the habit of using expensive or quack doctors, or humbug medicine that does you only harm, but put your trust in the greatest of all simple, pure remedies, American Co.'s Hop Bitters, that cure always at a trifling cost, and you will see better times and good health. Read "Rough on Corns."—Ask for Wells' "Rough on Corns." Quick relief, complete, permanent cure. Corns, warts, bunions. At chemists and druggists.
