(Received December 13, 1.15 a.m.) Melbourne, December 12. The Orient steamship Liguria, with ODlwaid mails from London to November 5, arrived this morning. Sydney, December 12. The attempts which have been made to get off the steamer Corangamite, which ran ashore at Jervis Bay, have been unsuccessful. Her position remains unchanged. No traces have yet been found of the bodies of those drowned in the Keilawarra's boat, no one belonging to that vessel having been picked up. ♦ SAD LOSS OP LIFE AT SEA. Melbourne, December 1. A sad record of loss of life at sea has been brought hy the ship Melbourne, which arrived on Thursday from London. The voyage was marked by incidents of a tragic character, and the loss of the chief and fourth officers and oue of the crew threw quite a gloom for a time on what had been up till then an agreeable trip. The accident which ended so disastrously happened on September 20th. There was a fresh N E. trade blowing at the time, with a high turbulent se*. About eight o'clock on the morning of thn day mentioned an able seaman, named Carson, fell overboard. The alarm was given, and the captain slates that Mr Valeniine F. Vale, chief officer, who was on watch at the time, gave the necessary orders to have everything put aback and the ship's way stopped. He got into the starboard bo-ir, the lee one, with a crew, and prepared to lower away. The ship was travelling at a good speed at the time and her way was not easily stopped. The boat unfortunately, was lowered before the ship's way was sufficiently checked, and part of the disconnecting apparatus (Liardet's patent) was not pu led. As a consequence the boat did not free itself, and at the same time it was struck by a sea, which washed out all the occupants and overturned it.
