By a collision between two coastal steamers last night off Trial Bay, north of Port Macquarrie, New South Wales, thirty-nine lives have been lost. The Kellawarra sank in seven minutes. The Christchurch coach arrived last night, at half-past ten o'clock, having been detained by the flooded state of the Otira River.
At a meeting of the Volunteer Fire Brigade, held last night, it was resolved that if the people of Kumara wish to be represented at the Fire Brigade demonstration to take place at Dunedin, this Brigade is ready to put a team in practice ; and, in order to test the question, that his Worship the Mayor be requested to call a meeting of gentlemen willing to form a committee for the purpose of carrying out the necessary arrangements. The New Year's Day Children's Picnic Committee meet in the Town Hall tomorrow evening, at eight o'clock.
Mr W. J. Pocock, the well-known agent of the Mutual Assurance Society of Victoria, is now in this town, and prepared to issue policies on most favoui'able terms. As these are set forth fully in an advertisement in the preceding column, it is not necessary for us to recapitulate the many advantages which the Mutual Assurance Society of Victoria offers. Mr Pocock is accompanied by a medical adviser in the person of Dr. T. L. Porter, formerly of Kumara, and who was so well and highly appreciated, personally and for his medical abilities.
In reference to the disposal by tender of a fourth share in Gray and party's extended claim, it is further notified that the claim is connected with and working into the No. 2 sludge-channel.
