Timaru, December 6. A serious accident occurred this morning at Milford, at a quarter to eleven, while a number were excavating at the side of the Milford mill. A man named Olaridgo was working under the pump digging out earth* when the earth gave way, the pump falling on his head, splitting it clean open. Tho man was speedily brought to Dr. Hayes, where he was treated. He however succumbed to his injuries this afternoon.
Wellington, December 6
The Native Minister to day declined to accede to the r<-qup«t that Te Whiti should be released from gaol for a couple of hours to-day in order that he might attend the funeral of Isaiah Porntu, the well-known chief to whom he was related.
Government have appointed Hon. J. Shephard, M.L.C., and Mr Montgomeiy, M. H.R., as Commissioners to inquire into the condition of secondary education in North Otago. Colonel Sir George Whitmore is to be promoted to the rank of MaiorGeneral.
The Aorangi’s voyage just completed is not the quickest as is generally supposed, although it is the second* best. Her voyage in July last is still the fastest on record by one hour and fifteen minutes. The outward voyages of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamers for the past six months are given below and will be interesting if only showing bow close has been the running of the Aoraogi, Rimutaka, Tongariro, and Kaikoura.

The race between Ciosson and Shaw for £IOO and the mile championship of New Zealand resulted in a splendid race, the latter winning by 10 yards. Connell and Horne, for" £2O, had a capital run, Connell won.
For the nine mile bicycle race— There were nine starters. It resulted as follows Marshall, lj Gethill, 2; Leckie, 3. A. Stewart was scratched. Marshall had a long start, and did the distance in 51| mins. Leckie’s shortest time was 45mins.

A young man named Theodore Brrhews, only a few months in the colony, blew oat bis brains with *a pistol in a boarding-house this morning, in a lit of depression, it is supposed,
Later. Among the effects of Theodore Berhew, who committed suicide at the Ilarbourview lodging house, were found a letter to Lady Vincent, in France, and a will in which he left bis money—£Bo, in the bank to his three friends— Messrs Ray, Claude Young, and W. H. Cooper. It finished up by “ Damning this confounded country.” He is said to have formerly been an officer in the Royal Navy, and came out second class in the Ruapehu. He had been forest planting at Rangirit i, and came to town a week, ago, and was in a depressed state of mind.
Waipawa, December 6
At the inquest on the body of Harold Michaelson who died from the effects of “Rough on Rats,” the jury found a verdict that deceased committed suicide by taking poison while in a state of despondency brought on by pecuniary embarrassment.
At the nomination for the Waitemata election to-day Richard Monk and H. W. Farnall were proposed. The show of hands was in favour of Monk. A poll was demanded by Farnall.
