CRICKET—GREY V. HOKITIKA.

[From the Grey River Argus.] The fourth contest between the abovenamed clubs for Messrs Grillen and Smith’s challenge cup took place on the Grey Club’s new ground on Saturday. The attendance during the day was very fair. The wicket, asphalte covered with cocoanut matting, was in splendid condition both for batting and howling, but the field was rather lumpy for any good display. The event, as shown by the scores proved a very onesided affair, the Hokitika men being completely outmatched. The Grey team was captained by A.’ R. Guinness, and the visitors by J. Lynch. The Hokitika, skipper, winning the toss, took the field, and Perkins, jun., and Tarleton were sent in to face the bowling of M‘Kay and Bell. The first over saw Tarleton run out, and M'Davitt took his place. Shortly afterwards Perkins was caught, and his successor A. Malcolm, only succeeded in making seven, while J. M'Davitt was bowled for four. Clements and Wickes supplied their places, and soon began to make matters lively. Both men hit with great freedom, and twos, threes, and fours came rapidly. Clements, after a long innings, was caught at long, stop when he had made 40, and Wickes suffered a like fate at slip for 31. Perk ins, sen., and Guinness added 15 and 12 runs respectively to the total before dismissal. The others assisted to thn tune of 12. The two teams adjourned at 2 o’clock to the Melbourne Hotel for luncheon, and shortly after resuming the rest of the Grey team were dismissed, the innings closing for the respectable total of 144. Hokitika then took the wickets, but Levy was the only one who could stand against the Grey trundling, and they were all out for 41 runs. Being 103 behind their opponents, they followed their innings, which was merely a repetition of their former performance, they only making a total of 30, of which Tennant, by careful play, contributed 18. The Grey men thus won by one innings and 73 runs. Hokitika has won the cup twice, and by their victory on Saturday Greymouth has two spokes in. The final contest will take place at Hokitika.
