CRICKET MATCHES.
AUSTRALIANS V. CANTERBURY. The cricketers of Canterbury were more successful than their southern neighbours against the Australian eleven. The latter after defeating the Otago twenty-two by six wickets, played eighteen of Canterbury. The men of the Plain made 178 in their first innings and 139 in their second—a total of 317. The Australians made only 99 in their first innings, and 82 for six wickets (Blackham retiring hurt) in their second—a total of 181. This was the state of the match when, time was called on the evening of the second day, Monday, 29th ult., so that the game was declared drawn in favour of Canterbury.
AUSTRALIANS V. WELLINGTON,
The Australians went to Wellington on Tuesday, 30th ultimo, and arrived at noon on Wednesday, and the match began at 2.30 p.m. The local men won the toss and went in, staying at the wickets till just on six. Several played confidently, and hit with freedom, especially Salmon, Lawson, R. Blacklock, and M'Girr. Riley, the top scorer, was missed twice; once by Palmer badly. The Australians showed signs of fatigue, and Evans and Phillips were not well after the rough trip. The attendance was not large, and a stiff breeze blew all day. The Wellington players scored 182 for their first innings, which looked promising for a victory. Next day, however, the Auttralians batted all day. A Press Association telegram states that the fielding of the Wellington team was incorrigibly bad ; every catch but one was dropped. Jones gave five or six chances, one particularly easy, but none were taken, and he ought to have been stumped twice. Palmer and Trumble were also each missed once. The attendance was about 3000. Jones, not out, 154; Palmer, bowled M'Girr, 70 ; Trumble, not out, 28; extras, 4; total for one wicket, 262.
