LAYING THE CORNER STONE OF CHRIST CHURCH, NELSON.
[Abridged from the Nelson Mail, November 17th.] The ceremony of laying the corner stone of Christ Church, which is now being rebuilt, was performed this morning, the stone being laid at the 'corner of the new chaneel. The cler«y who took part, in the ceremony were the Right Rev. the Bishop of Nelson, Archdeacons Butt and Mules, and the Revs.

Archdeacon Butt ie-d the 84th Psalm, after which prayers were offered up by the Bishop, theVen. Archdeacon Mules read the 127th Psalm, and Hymn 213 "The Church's one Foundation" was sung. The stone was then laid by the Bishop wiih the following words:— "In the f-iith of Jesus of Christ, on behalf of his Chinch and people, I lay tho corner Mone. of :his building as Parish Chinch of the Parish of Clnist Church, and as the Cathedral Chm-ch of the Diocese of Nelson, in succession to the building formerly erected on this site on June 26, 1850, to bear the same name as befoie of our Lord and only Saviour Jesus Christ, to the honor and glory of the Holy, Eternal, and Undivided Trinity, to whom be praise and dominion now and for ever, Amen." There were placed in the cavity copies of the latest issues of the Nelson Weekly News, Evening Mail, aud Colonist, also a bottle containing coins of the reign of Victoria, the paper found in the foundation stone laid in 1850, and a {taper containing the following which was read by Mr Kingsley : In the name of God, Amen. —This is to certify that the corner stone of this church was laid on Wednesday, the seventeenth day of November, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eightysix, hy the right Reverend Andrew Burn Suter, D.D., Bishop of Nelson, being the second building erected on or about this site, the Rev. John Pratt Kempthomo being Incumbent ; Messrs Wilson Heaps and George Ashcroffc being Churchwardens ; Messrs J. P. Black, F. J. Blundell, B. A. Bran fill, J. R. Dodson, T. Duncan, W. C. Gilbert, A. Greenfield, H. D. Jackson, A. Pitt, and S. B. White being the Vestry ; the Diocesan Synod being in session and attending the service ; The Ven. H. F. Butt, Arcedeacon of Marlborough ; The Ven. C. 0. Mules, Archdeacon of Waimea; The Ven. T. B. Maclean, Archdeacon of Mawhera, North Westland ; Albert Pitt Esq., Chancellor of the Diocese ; Hon. J. W. Barnicoat, Diocesan Treasurer ; Sir William Jervois, K. 0.8., Governor of New Zealand ; The Most Reverend H. J. C. Harper, D.D., Primate of the Church of the Province of New Zealand ; C. Y. Fell Esq., Mayor of Nelson and Diocesan Register ;—Mountfort, architect; Andrew Brown, contractor.—(Signed) Robert I. Kingsley, Diocesan Secretary. The Ven. Archdeacon Butt gave a short sketch of the laying of the foundation stone in June 1850, he at that time being the Incumbent. _ He spoke of the time when service used to be held in a building that was also used as a powder magazine, the Church Hill being then fortified, and those who entered the camp h.td to do so under a portcullis. The Bishop announced that he hoped to open the church in the third week of February. The benediction was then prononnced and the proceedings terminated.
