PROVINCIAL NEWS.

'united press ASSOCIATION.]

Wellington, November 18. At the inquest on Andrews the verdict was "accidentally burned to death." The Coroner said it was the most extraordinary case that ever came under his notice. He could only suppose that the man had concealed his condition from a sense of shame at being brought to such a state by drink. A little fellow named Wm. Searanoke, whose parents reside at Edentown, Upper Hutt, met with a serious accident this morning. It appears that he commenced pricking a dynamite cap with a pin, and it suddenly exploded, blowing away four of his fingers and seriously injuring his face. Christchurch, November IS. The Hon. Edward Richardson, accompanied by his Private Secretary, arrived in Christchurch early this morning. During the day he was engaged with Sir J. Vogel and Mr Alan Scott in completing arrangements for the fin:il draft of the contract for the Midland Railway. All the members of the Cabinet are to meet in Wellington by December 1.

Timaru, November 17. Sir George Whitmore held his annual inspection of the South Canterbury Battalion this afternoon. The weather was glorious, and as a consequence a very large number of townspeople turned out to watch the proceedings. The Volunteers mustered in good force, 360 all told being on parade. The men were put through a number of evolutions, and conducted themselves very creditably, and were complimented by Sir George for their general smartness. While addressing the battalion, Sir George somewhat neverely commented ou the extremely low average of the shooting throughout the colony, and expressed the hope that some alteration would be made soon. In the evening Sir George Whitmore was banquetted by the officers of the Garrison Corps.

November 18. A splendid specimen of Californian salmon was caught in the harbour last night by o young man catching herrings from a shoal with a landing net. The fish w.ighed six pounds and was 26 inches in length.

INQUEST ON THE BOBY OF CAPTAIN CAIN. Timaru, November 18. The inquest on the body of Captain Cain was continued this morning before J. S. Beswick, Esq., coroner. After hearing evidence, The Coroner said that he thought the jury would have little hesitation, after hearing the evidence of Dr. Hogg, in arriving at the conclusion that the late Captain Cain had met his death by poison. Thejaw was that if death was accelerated, no matter in what condition the victim mignt be, it was murder. He then referred to the evidence as it pointed to Hall being connected with the death of the deceased.

Tlin jury retired to consider their verdict at 3 15. The jury returned at 3.45. The foreman said the jury were of opinion that, Captain Cain's death was accelerated by poison, but by whom administered there is not sufficient evidence to show. They therefore returned a verdict of wilful murder against some person or persons unknown.
