As the passengers by the morning train on the northern line were passing through Makarewn bush they saw a man hanging from a tree. This proved to bo a settler named Michael Crowe, who lately went through tho Bank-
ru|)tcy Court, and had sought, refuge from big trouble in iuicide.
STEALING LETTERS. NEWSPAPERS, &c.
Lwercargill, November 12,
A yoang married man named Frederick H. Dale, employed for a number of years as a letter carrier, was charged at the Police Couit to-day with stealing a letter containing three ono pound notes, and remanded for eight days. The accused, who is well-known from his connection with Oddfellows and Volunteers, admitted the offence to the postmaster and police. Later. In the case of F. H. Dale, letter carrier here, for purloining letters, 257 letters, 149 circulars, 134 newspapers, 192 book packets, and 24 postal cards (total 789) were found. It is supposed the hulk of these were lefc at his house by Dale through sheer neglect of duty. Accused was looked upon as a very trustworthy man, but it appears he has been drinking too much lately. Stepß will be taken as soon as possible to deliver the delayed mailings. Twentytwo letters had been opened, and it "is suspected that Dale has appropriated the contents if they were valuable.
