VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE COMPETITION.

The Volunteer Fire Brigade competition between eight picked men each of Hokitika, Greymoutb and Kumara Fire Brigades commenced this morning, at Greyraouib, at 10 o'clock. The Hokitika and Kumara Fire Brigade teams left Kuraara by yesterday afternoon's.tram, and' it was well they did, for had ihey delayed till this morning, the probabilities are that the competitions would hare had to be postponed, as the rivers are so high in flood that the usual tram and mails from Greymouth could not cross the Saltwater or Teremakau Rivers, and have not arrived up to the present hour. The weather has not been allowed to interfere with the progress of the competitions, and from what follows, which is telegraphed by our own correspondent, it will be seen that the Kumara team has been most successful, having won the three principal events, the prizes for which amount in the aggregate to £26, as follow : I—Engine Practice, for Eight Men.
