The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. MONDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1886. FATAL ACCIDENT.
We are sorry to have to record another fatal accident that occurred this morning to a miner named Michael Cadogan one of a party of six working in the claim known as Burke and party’s. It appears that they were dealing out an old tunnel, intending to use it as a new tail-race, on a deeper level than the one they are at present using, and they came across a jump-up which was blocked with stones and debris. The unfortunate man, coming into the tunnel, struck at it with bis pick, when the whole mass came down, entirely smothering him and partially covering one of the mates, Morris Joyce, who had a very narrow escape, and who would have shared the samefate only that the body of water was not large enough to carry the stuff any considerable distance. The body was recovered at about 11.30 a.m., and taken to Mulvihill’s Hotel, there to await an inquest.
