BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening; present—His Worship the Mayor (H. Burger, Esq.), Councillors G. Anderson, Killeen, Olden, Mulvihill, Jorgensen, Maloney, Fitzsimmons, M'llroy, and Ziegler. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The outward correspondence was approved of, and the inward read and received, and considered. A letter was read from Louis and Herring, who applied for progress payment on contract No, 2.—On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Fitzsimmons, it was resolved that the sum of .£ls, progress payment ou contract for felling, be passed for payment to D. Louis and Co. From S. Garguilo, re approach to his Btable.—lt was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Jorgensen, seconded by Cr. Killeen, that the letter be referred to the Public Works Committee, with power to act. From P. D. Todd, re dangerous condition of footpath in front of his shop, and requesting repair of same.—On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Maloney, it was resolved that Mr Todd be requested to remove the platform, and then that the day-labour man be instructed to put the footpath in repair. From the Borough Auditors, stating that they had audited the accounts for the six months ended 30th September, 1886, and found the same to be correct. They also added that—" The Boiough accounts are kept in a clear and accurate manner."—Received." From the Bank of New Zealand stating that 1290z5. 12dwts. gold has been purchased by the Bank, as the produce of gold obtained in the borough between the 14th and the 30th September, 1886.—Received. From John Skipper, reminding Council of extra work to culverts on Borough Reserve.—lt was resolved that Mr Skipper be allowed 30s for extra work done on contract. BOUNDARY ROAD CONTRACT. From Edmund Rogers, who, on the 14th instant, reported on the Borough Boundary Road contract as follows: "Mr Mayor and gentlemen This work, I am sorry to inform you, has been carried on very slow indeed; only two men have been employed Bince the contractor started the work. There should have been at least four men constantly at work to complete the contract in the time specified. As yet there is not one chain of this road properly formed, nor is there one culvert completed. I have recommended Mr Spyer to push this work ahead; it will be better for himself, and more satisfactory to your Council.— I have, «&c, Edmund Rogers, Superintendent Boundary Road Contract."— Keceived. Also, from L. J. Spyer, the contractor for same, who wrote—" Gentlemen— The whole of the formation of the boundary track beiug about completed, I beg to apply for progress payment on account of work done." The Mayor moved—" That the sum of £25 be passed for payment to Mr L. J. Spyer, subject to the approval of the Inspector of the contract. Cr. Killeen seconded the motion. Cr. Anderson said he had been over this road the day previously, and it was in a wretched condition. He did not anprove of voting this amount whilst the formation was in the state it is. Cr. Jorgensen moved an amendment—" That the sum of £lB be passed for payment, subject to the approval of the Inspector of the contract." Cr. Anderson seconded the amendment. Cr. Mulvihill thought it was bad policy to vote money on contracts until there was some guarantee of the work being done to the satisfaction of the inspector appointed. The Mayor withdrew his motion, and the amendment was put as the substantive resolution, and carried. FELLING AND FENCING. The Town Clerk read a report from the Committee of the whole Council re felling and fencing on the Borough Reserve. The Committee recommended that the ground on the Borough Reserve from peg A to peg B be felled one chain wide; to include the corner between the line and the grubbed ground. Also, that a fence be erected along the line of the beach road, 33 feet from the centre of the road from peg B to 0 • and the scrub and undergrowth up to 3 incites in diameter be cut down, and all scrub and fallen branches be burnt for a distance of 12 feet inside the fence. On the motion of the Mayor seconded by Cr. Killeen, the report was
received and adopted, and the Town Clerk instructed to prepaie specificatioiis. Accounts to the amount of £9l 2s lid were passed for payment.. [The remainder of our ropnrt will he given on Monday.]
