BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Westland Board of Education was held in the County Council Chambers, Hokitika, on Tuesday; present —The Chairman (Mr R. J. Seddon), Messrs Jack, Rose, Rae, Gtimmond, and M'Whirter. From the West Coast Times we extract particulars of business of interest to residents in this part of the district: CORRESPONDENCE. From Education Board of Otago, re advisability of changing Inspectors of schools of various districts.—Received. An opinion was expressed by the members that the plan was a very good one, but impossible to be carried out where Inspectors were secretaries to the Board. Mr Grimmond moved, and it was carried, that it was advisable to place Inspectors under the control of the Educational Department, and, further, that the Board approved of the exchange of Inspectors where possible. From Waimea School Committee, asking for a farther sum for leveling ground near theschool.—Received.—Mr M'Whirter explained that the quantity of ground already cleared, was insufficient. He moved that the sum of £3 be granted.—Seconded by Mr Grimmond ami carried. From the same, stating that tenders had beeu called for a price for removal of the old school building, and enclosin« tender from Mr J. Perry.—Received, and tender accepted. From Stafford School Committee, forwarding various accounts. Received. From same, stating that Mr Binning had been appointed head teacher.— Received, and resolved that the appointment be confirmed, and the Secretary telegraph to Mr Binning forthwith. From same, asking for the construction of a residence for the teacher.— Received. From head teacher of the Hokitika Schol, signifying his dissension from the finding of the Teacher's Association re the elimination of science, &c, from school standards. From the head teacher of the Kumara School, expressing similar sentiments at very great length.—Received, and resolved that the teachers be thanked for their opinions. SCHOLARSHIP. The following nominations for the Scholarship were then read from the following candidates:—K. M'Leod, Ross; W. H. Grey, Arahu.a; R. Wells and W. Houston, Woodstock ; H. Williams and H. Marsh, Staffotd; E. Boucher, Kanieri; Martha Williams and Elizabeth Crowley, Blue Spur; C. Malfroy, Hokitika. FINANCES. Various Committee's accounts to the amount of £3322 ss, were received and passed for payment. Receipts, £894 3s 6d; expenditure, £540. l RESERVE. Mr Jack moved that the Goldsborough Committee be empowered to lease their school reserve—Mr M'Whirter seconded the motion, and it was Carried. The meeting then adjourned.
