The prospectors at the new rush have now sunk their shaft 64 feet, but at this depth are .stopped by water. An agency of the National Bank of New Zealand (Limited) will be opened at Dillman's Town on or about Tuesday next, the 19th instant, for the transaction of general business and the purchase of gold. The Dillman Town quadrille assembly will meet at the Empire Rooms to-morrow evening, at eight o'clock. The third and final dividend in the estate of W. Waring Taylor, of Wellington, is now payable. Creditors will not have much to receive, as the dividend is only 4jd in the pound. The total of the | three dividends amounts to the munificent , sum of 2s Sj-d. At a tvjent fancy dress ball in Brisbane the greatest sue'-.-a w.-s ;: young gentieuiiin \vuo got no as "oo"—rags, and broom complete. He passed the hat |
round and collected a good number of coppers, but when he approached a stout lady who was "feeding lovely" in the refreshment room, and groaned out "I'se very hungry I " that charitable female responded, "Go away, you nasty little boy," and wanted to know how such a disgraceful object got into the building. In a country which hardly requires to be mentioned (says an English paper) eggs are sometimes served on Sunday in the inns to guests, who, on account of a certain Act of Parliament, dare not call for "a drink." These eggs are full of whisky, the meat having been blown, and the whisky put in its place, then the egg is hermetically aealed and ready for use. A Scotchman never tires of eggs. "Do you know this woman 1" asked a lawyer of a negro. "Yes, sah, I knows her." "Do you know her very intimately ?" " No, sah, karn't say as I do." "How long have you known her]" " Well, I got 'quainted wid her short time afore I married her." " She's your wife, then?" "Yes, sah, sorter." "Thought you did not know her intimately?" "That's what I jackerlated." "I don't understand then how she can be your wife?" "Well, ye see, sah, she 'longs to de church, de singing society, de sisters o' de sacred broom, de tahters o' Ham, de sisters o' Rechab, de Blue Riban, an' two or dree little side shows. Er 'oman what is kept so busy, sah, aint got no time ter fool er roun' home !"
