THE LARGEST TELESCOPE IN THE WORLD.
The Baltimore Courier gives an account of the principal telescope of a new observatory, which owes its existence to the munificence of a Californian millionaire, a Mr Lick, who bequeathed for its establishment no less than 700,000 dollars, with the express wish that the observatory should be equipped with the best telescope that could be manufactured. It is hoped that before the next winter this wish will be fulfilled, and that the observatoiy will be ready for work. It has taken five years to have the lenses finished. They were made by a French house, cost 25,000 dollars each, and have been polished by Alvan Clarke, of Boston, They will be set in a steel tube, a yard in diameter and 57 feet long, and have taken more than two years to polish. The observatory is situated on Mount Hamilton, in Santa Clara County, California. For the convenience of visitors a road has been made up to the observatory at a cost of 78,000 dollars.
