A SQUATTER'S SON AMONGST THE " PHILISTINES."

A wealthy squatter in Victoria sent his eldest son Home to see the Colonial Exhibition. ' The father, being incapacitated by an accident, was unable to accompany him. The young man started with plenty of advice, lots of letters of introduction, and last, but not least, £IOOO in his pocket to pay his expenses, and m»ke sundry purchases for his mother and sisters. On the voyage to London in one of the big line of steamers the .youth, who had never been away from home before, lost £250 at unlimited 100. He saw the Exhibition, and there fell in with a fair charmer who, in the course of a couple of weeks, eased him of some £SOO. Waking up to a sense of his position he resolved to lead a better life; but unfortunately while with patriotic zeal indulging in some sparkling colonial wine at one of Spiers and Pond's bars, fell in with Philistines, who, taking the callow, youth to aquiet room off the Haymarket, managed to rake in the remainder of his money. By pawning his jewellery and some of the few presents he bought for his sisters, he managed to take out a steerage passes for Sydney, for lie was too ashamed to ask assistance of his friends at Home. And now that youth's father siiid that Exhibition is no d d good to anyone.

Mothers Don't Know—How many children are punished for being uncouth, willful and indifferent to instructions or reward simply because they are out of health ! An intelligent lady said of a child of this kind : —" Mother dont know that she should give the little one moderate doses of American's Co.'s Hop Bitters for two or three weeks, and the child would be all a parent could desire."
