ARRIVAL OF THE WAIPARA FROM THE SOUTH.

\ The Waipara arrived at Hokitika I from the South yesterday afternoon with two passengers and a cargo of cattle. In attempting to cross the bar the vessel grounded on a sand bank close to the end of the noith training wall, and was got off after a hawser had been fastened to the south spit works, which had the effect of slewing her head round and putting her into deeper water. As the tide made sho steamed out to sea and returning at full speed hugged the outer bank and sueceeded in entering safely. By the Waipara's mail we (West Coast Times) learn that the s.s. Hinemoa arrived at Big Bay on the 22nd. ult., and landed 150 passengers and 120 tons stores, &c. Captain Faircbild reports having experienced fine weather in Big Bay the two days he was there. Everything was landed without accident or mishap, and he says the party he brought round are a likely-looking body of men. Mr Murray (engineer) and party went on to Jackson's Bay, to commence operations on the south road. The contract for this work will be out in about six weeks, and will be pushed rapidly ahead, so that communication cau be had with Jackson's Bay. The contractor for the four and a half milea f.om the Jackson's to the Cascade River has now commenced, and will push the work ahead as fast as possible.
