The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1886.

The Hon. J. Ballance (Native Minister and Minister of Lands) telegraphed to Mr Scddon, M.H.R., to-day, that he hoped to be able to visit this district about the beginning of December. All the members of the Ministry are expected to be in Wellington before the end of next week. We acknowledge receipt from the Government Printer of a bundle of parliamentary papers, which includes the Appropriations for 1886-87, and the Roport on the Surveys of New Zealand for 1885-80 ; also Nos. 26 and 27 Hansard. The inquiry into the dismissal of the late housemaid to the Westland Hospital is to bo held this afternoon. On Tuesday and Friday in each week th j morning tram wiil leave Kumara and Grey mouth respectively, at 6 a.m. instead of 8 a.m., commencing on Tuesday next, the sth October*. The Christchurch coach arrived this afternoon, at the usual hour. We (West Coast Times) have received information to the effect that some evil disposed pors a; or persons are in : hp iri.hu oi an. using themselves by pdieii.iHu ij.j- i net n one iv.uuara road, at the Kapitea Hill. The obstruction consists of two large boulders placed directly

in the wheel ruts with a heavy slab across. What would become of a horse and buggy and its occupants falling foul of this obstruction on a dark night, may be imagined. It is to be hoped that some steps will be taken to detect these wouldbe wreckers and bring them to justice. Commander Edwin wired urgent to-day at noon that bad weather may be expected from any direction between west to south and south-east. Every indication of a very heavy gale. Eleven collections of geological specimens (says the Post) were recently received by the Minister of Mines from Sir Julius Von Haast, who purchased them at Bonn, in Germany, for the New Zealand Mines Department. Several of these collections have been distributed, one being sent to each of the following places : Thames, Lawrence. Kumara, Dunedin, Naseby, and Bannockburn. It is probable that other collections will be sent to Westport, Reefton, and Queenstown—and one—the largest and most important—will be retained by the department here. Special attention is drawn to the auction sale of Messrs H. Goulston and Co., which takes place this evening at seven o’clock; and as the firm have positively decided on giving up business in Westland, the whole of the stock will be sold without the slightest reserve, A young man named Jonathan Roberts, formerly employed in the Bank of New Zealand at Timaru, was arrested yesterday at Christchurch for forgery. He forged a cheque for £76 at the National Bank on Thursday, purporting to be signed by Ballantyne and Co., drapers. Two boys named Castleton, near Hamilton, North Island, have reported being chased from a creek at their father’s farm by some strange reptile resembling an alligator. Constable Well went out to the locality with some settlers, but failed to see it.

Good Words—From Good Authority.— *** We confess that we are perfectly amazed at the run of your American Co.’s Hop Bitters. We never had anything like it, and never heard of the like. The writer (Benton) has been selling drugs here for nearly thirty years, and has seen the rise of Hostetter’s Vinegar and all other bitters and patent medicines, but never did any of them, in their best days, begin to have the run that American Hop Bitters have. * * We can’t get enough of them. We are out of them half the time. * * Extract from letter to Hop Bitters Co., U.S.A., August 22, ’7B, from Benton, Myers, &Co., Wholesale druggists, Cleveland, 0. Be sure and see.
