PROVINCIAL NEWS

[united press ASSOCIATION.]

Timaru, September 28,

The body of the late Captain Cane was exhumed to-night. It was taken to the deadhouse at the Hospital, where a post mortem was held by Professor Ogston and Dr. Hogg, Drs. Lovegrove, M'lntyre, and Stewart being also present. The Professor found the body very much decomposed, and took out portions of the brain, liver, kidney, rectum, and other parts of the intestine, leaving really little but bone and skin in the coffin. The men commenced to lift tho coffin about 9 p.m., and had it on the way to the deadhouse at 10.10 p.m. The post mortem took about half an hour, and the coffin and its contents were then removed and relaid in the grave. Professor Ogston takes his specimens to Dunedin to-morrow. The sight at the grave was a ghostly one, and the night being a fearfully dark one, added fresh horror to the scene.

Auckland, September 30. Important discoveries of richly mineralised quartz have been made on the eastern side af Great Barrier Island. Four analyses have just been made of stone from different reefs, the lowest of which gives 23dwts. of gold and 7 ozs. of silver per ton, and the highest 6 ozs. of gold and 16 ozs. of silver per ton. The Government have been communicated with in order to have the district proclaimed a goldfield.

The body of Stuart Jamieson, missing from Oneliunga, an oysterman, was found at Week's Island, Manukau. No further news has been received respecting the wreckage found near Port Macqoarie. There is reason to believe the name-board found may possibly be that of the schooner "Sovereign of Auckland," which was dismasted in a gale off the Australian coast some weeks ago. E. Greening, a well-dressed woman, was arrested while trying to purchase laudanum at a chemist's. She had threatened to poison herself. Just a 8 the Tarawera was leaving the wharf, a levanter, booked for Melbourne, was arrested for attempting to abscond from his creditors.
