vcrameat Loans to Local Bodies Act, and notice will shortly be given of the date when applications for loans can be made. A great number of inquiries have already been made by various bodies, but no loans can be granted until authority haa been obtained to raise them. This is given .both under th- Local Bodies Loan Bill and Counties Act. The latter comes into force in January, but the requisite power is in existence in 'he old Act.
September 21. It has been decided to retain Wardell, R.M., in his present position, and off-r the vacancy in the Wairarapa to V< n Smrmer, R.M. for Hokianga. Vogel s appliction for a re-hearing of the libel action against the Evening Press is set down for to-morrow, but it is understood it will be adjourned to enable the Attorney-General to conduct the argument for the plaintiff. A man named Ward was found dead at Island Bay. He leaves a wife and ten children. The stomach is sent for analysis.
CHRiSTcnrncii, September 20. Yesterday Robert Allan Lightband, of Allan and Co., was thrown from his horse at New Biighton and was seveiely injured. His jaw was broken and the flesh torn down from each side the mouth. He remained unconscious for two hours after the accident. To day his appearance is hopeful.
Bluff, September 20. Johannes Schield, chief mate of the barque Neptune, was cleaning a small revolver the muzzle of the weapon being turned towaids him, when a loaded chamber suddenly went off, the bullet entering his waist and chest. Schield was conveyed to the Invercargill hospital.
Dunedin, September 21. Tho flon. J. Bathgate, M.L.C., is dead.
Timaru, September 21. The Hall case was resumed to-day. Dr. Drew, who was in consultation wii h Dr MTntyre, is being examined. It is reported that the Crown do not intend to call Mrs Hall, as she practically declines to give evidence.
Auckland, September 20. Herbert Geast was found drowned in the garden tank at Mason’s gardens, Parnell. He was manager at Mason’s. He fell in, and how he got drowned is a mystery.
Ihe body of a man 60 years of age was found in the Waihoa, near f« Aroha, with grey hair, beard and moustache, apparently a school teacher out of employment. An application to the secretary of the Board of Education of New Plymouih for a testimonial and certificate was found in his pocket, September 21. In the Auckland v. Sydney football ma'ch Auckland won bv 14 to 2. KUMARA HOSPITAL. The ordinary meeting of the Hospital Trustees was held in the Town Hall last evening • present—The Chairman and Vice-Chairman (Messrs Burger and Voysey), Messrs Morris, Maloney, Dungan, and Wooldridge.
Tiie minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved of. Mr Dungnn, on behalf of the House Committee, reported haring visited the Hospital and inquired of the Wardsman why he had not drawn attention to the fact of one of the articles supplied to the Hospital being damaged. The Wardsman explained that he had informed the Medical Officer and the Chairman, and had thought that was sufficient. Mr Dungnn told him in future to give as much possible information as possible on the account. Mr Ross would in future report whether each patient were a ticket-holder or otherwise.
Tlie Chairman repot ted, on behalf of the Building Committee, that Mr Bell, the contractor, had sub-let the painting,' paperhanging, &c., to Mr Jas. Bfenyon’ subject to the approval of the Trustees. On the motion of Mr Voysey, sccondeii by Mr Payne, it was resolved—- ” That the Trustees cannot see their way to interfere in the matter of paperhanging and piping, between the contractor and Mr Benyon, as they consider it a private arrangement between themselves, but that as a tradesman the Trustees have no objection to Mr Benyon doing the work.” The procuring of grass seed and sewing the same, and the question of cleaning the chimneys, were matters left for the House Committee to deal with.
