TAKING POSSESSION OF THE KERMADEC ISLANDS.

H.M.S. Diamond arrived at SundayIsland (Kermadecs) on July 31, and after she had anchored Captain Clayton and a party of about 40 men landed, and took forma] possession of the group in the name of her Majesty Queen Victoria, the flag being hoisted and the ceremony usual on such occasions gone through. As the islands are quite uninhabited, with the exception that there are numbers of goats and birds, the event was somewhat shorn of some of the importance which would otherwise have attached to it, and it passed off quietly. A stay of about three hours was made on shore, during which a part of the island in the vicinity of the harbour was explored. Numerous hot springs were observed, and the country generally was found to be volcanic.
