Captain M'Gee, of the Triumph, which arrived at Lyttelton to-day, brings an account of a meeting at Derby on July 10, at which Dr. Lovegrove, the Government Resident, inenfc of the report given by Sergeant Troy. This report says that several diggeis were doing very well at Kimberiey and had made several very remunerative discoveries of gold. Captain M'Gee's opinion is that the fields will ultimately be a great success. Dunedin, August 31. The extent of injuries received by Rignold in tailing down a trap at the theatre are Dot definitely known yet. He will be unable to play this week. September 1. Mr Bradshaw had a relapse during the night and expired this afternoon. Invercargill, August 31. W. Forrest, aged 60, through illhealth, attempted suicide by taking a glass fall of poisonous linament this nnming. He then informed the police of what he had done, and was taken to the hospital, where his windpipe was cut to prevent suffocation. He is in a critical state. Auckland, August 31. Peter Gonzalis, a Spaniard, is in custody, charged with a murderous assault on his son-in-law, George Reid, last uight. Prisoner said that Reid was illtieating Mrs Reid when he struck him. The weapon used is supposed to hnvo been a pointed iron one. Reid has two dangerous wounds on his foiehead, and is in the hospital. Later. Gonzalis appeared at the Police Court to-day, and was remanded. Phoebe Martin, wife of a gum-dig«er fell dowu a staircase in a house in Alexander street last night, and on bein» picked up was found to be dead, her neck having been dislocated. Mr Robiuson, of the firm of M'Keone Robinson and Avigdor, London, contractors for a portion of the Midland Railway, arrived yesterday from Nelson. He was accompanied by Mr Borgen, C.E., and these gentlemen have just surveyed from Christchurch to the West Coast, and so overland to Nelson with the object of getting some practical idea of the line throughout. Mr Borpen remains in the colony, and awaits the arrival of Mr M'K»om«, who will personally superintend the work j but Mr Robinson returns home imweiiately
to report to his firm on the experience he has gained of the Hue. He left by the Rotomabana for Melbourne, via the South, to-day. Mr Robinson had an interview this morning with both Sir Julius Togel and the Minister for Public Works. August 31. The first section of the Midland Bailway, from Brunnerton to the head of the Teremakau River, is to be immediately commenced under the direction of Mr Borgen, engineer to the contractors, and the supervision of Mr Napier Bell, engineer to the company. The same contractors are, it is understood, likely to take up at once a further contract extending from Brunnerton to Reefton. Thus the line will be commenced towards Christcburch in one direction and towards Nelson in another.
