The Australian cricketers commenced a match to-day at Gravesend against the South of England. The team was composed as follows :—Paterson, G. G. Hearn, F. Hearn, and Wotton (Kent) W. W. Read, Bowley, Lohmann, and Maui ice Read (Surrey), J esse Hide and Humphrey (Sussex), and Woof (Gloucestershire). The weather was fine and there was a very large attendance. The Australians went in first, and remained at the wickets until the slumps were drawn for the day, when the score stood at 282, with seven wickets down. The highest contributors were—Palmer (caught), 93, and Bonner (caught) 43. (Received September 1, 1.15 p.m.) August 31. In the cricket match at Gravesend, the Australians in their first innings scored 299, all out. The South of England have six wickets down for 90. >——< THE GREAT SCULLING SWEEPSTAKES. In the sculling races to-day on the Thames, Beach, the champion, beat Lee very easily. Matterson won the race with Wallace Ross by five lengths, and Teemer that with Perkins by three lengths. The following is the latest betting for the Sculling Sweepstake of 200sovs each, with 500 sovs added 6to 4 against Beach, 100 to 30 against Teemer, 4 to 1 against Wallace Ross, 6 to 1 against Niel Matterson, 7 to 1 against Bubear and Perkins, 9 to 1 against Lee. August 30. The Times considers that Beach, Bubear and Matterson have the best chance of winning the great sculling sweepstakes.
