THE REPRESENTATION BILL. SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATES. KUMARA • AND THE RAILWAY DEVIATION. CHRISTCHURCH ROAD MEN'S WAGES. THE PROROGATION. [PROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, August 14. The Representation Bill was thrown out last night, on the Premier moving that the House go into Committee on the Bill, by 39 to 36. The discussion was of a very animated nature, all the West Coast members opposing it and voting with the majority, while even the Ministry were divided, the Premier (Sir R. Stout), and the Minister for Justice (Mr Tole), voting with the minority, while the Treasurerr (Sir J. Vogel), Minister for Mines (Mr Larnach), and Minister for Public Works (Mr E. The Supplementary Estimates provide £ISOO for the Hokitika Harbour Works ; and for Mrs Phelan, £52 per annum; also £IOOO for widening the Bowen-Hokitika Road, on £ for £ subsidy. The contract for the Arahura bridge is to be let on Monday. Kumara is to be connected with the Grey-Hokitika Railway, the line by survey having been proved to be practicable. In answer to Mr Seddon, the Hon. the Minister for Public Works has stated that the wages of the men on the Christchurch road is not to be interfered with, and that the District Engineer has been instructed that the notice of reduction which had beer, given, was never intended should be made to apply to the men on the Christchurch Road. Members are packing up, and the prorogation will take place about Tuesday next.
