BIG RAILWAY TUNNEL IN QUEENSLAND.

The work of piercing, for railway purposes, the Woy Woy Mountain, near Gosford, Brisbane Water, was completed on Saturday, says the Sydney Morning Herald of July 19. Few events that have taken place during the present year were more worthy of being celebrated. The length of this tunnel is 1 mile 4 chains. The work was commenced on the Ist March, 1884, the last shot to complete the line of communication being put in on Saturday. Some idea of the magnitude of the task may be gathered from the fact that to complete this work some 10,000,000 bricks will be required, and the number of casks of cement used is no less than 10,000. From the start of the undertaking at the time mentioned to its present stage, work has been carried on without cessation night and day, excepting only upon Sundays, and throughout the whole of that time no time has been lost nor any serious accident sustained. In the work of removing the rock, over 100 tons of gunpowder and 10 tons of dynamite have been used. The total length of the section of railway on which this work occurs is 14 miles, upon the whole length of which work is more or less extensively being carried on, the magnum opus, however, being the tunnel, which undoubtedly ranks among the greatest engineering undertakings in the colony.
