CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The usual meeting of the Board was held in the County Council Chambers, Hokitika, on Tuesday, at 2.30 p.m., present—The Chairman (Mr Michel) and Messrs Jack, Burger, and Grimtnond. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence read and approved. The Times reports reference to matters affecting this part of the district as follows : INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. Letter from the Premier’s office, dated July 6tb, asking that the balancesheet in future be forwarded to the district auditor.—Received. From the same, with reference to Mrs Phelan, and the old liabilities of the Totara and Kumara Hospitals, to the effect that Government might ask the House to grant a sum for that purpose, but at present Government declined to pay the liabilities in question.—Received. From Mr Sevan, M.H.R., with reference to the above letter’s.—The Chairman said the Act provided that the Board was to take over the assets and liabilities of the institutions in question.—Mr Burger moved that Mrs Phelan’s case be referred to the Board’s solicitor.—Seconded by Mr Jack and carried,—Mr Jack suggested that a letter should be written to Government pointing out that on the statements made by Government the Board had advanced the money to Mrs Phelan, and complaining of the same. From Industrial School, Caversham, forwarding account for £l4, maintenance of three children (Bartletts). — Received, and account passed for payment. Prom St. Mary’s Industrial School, forwarding account for £22 15s, for maintenance of two children committed by the Magistrate.—Received, and account passed for payment. From Mr Rudkin, of Kumara, dated Augusr 7, enclosing voucher of the old accounts of Kumara Hospital amounting to £26 4s 6d. Also forwarding correspondence from Mr Seddon with reference to Andrew Carlstrom, who had been permitted to occupy a place in the Government Sanatorium, at the Springs, for some time longer, and praying the earnest consideration of the Board to the same.—Received.— The accounts were passed for payment.—Mr Burger said the Board should let the Andrew Carlstrom matter stand over till the return of Mr Seddon, who would help them all he could.—Agreed to. From Mr Weisner, enclosing statement and balance sheet of Kumara Hospital, and apologising for the delay in not forwarding them.—Received. ACCOUNTS, Accounts to the amount of £4BO were passed for payment. In passing the accounts considerable discussion ensued upon the charge made by Mr Ryan for supervising and drawing plans for the addition to the Ross hospital. The price agreed to be paid for supervision, &c, was 5 per cent, upon the total cost, and he notv charged £ll 14s as the amount of commission, and travelling expenses £4.—On the motion of Mr Burger, it was resolved that the matter be left in the hands of a sub-committee, the amount to be allowed not to exceed per cent, on the total cost. The Chairman stated the cost of the repairs to the Hospital would amount to £339. The Chairman stated that -the credit balance in the bank amounted to £552 14s. This concluded the business, and the Board adjourned.
