(Received August 9, 0.30 a.m.) August 7. The Rev. Dr. (Professor) Lowdenhas been appointed Bishop of Edinburgh, vice the late Dr. Cotterill. Rioting has been renewed in Belfast. The police were compelled to fire upon the mob in order to quell the disturbance. Seven persons are known to be injured. The re-elections of all the Ministers have been unopposed with the exception of that of Mr Henry Matthew, Q.C., Home Secretary. Differences are understood to exist in the Cabinet respecting the holding of an autumn session, the Unionist Ministers being opposed to the same. (Received August 9, 12.20 p.m.) Evening. The rioting at Belfast last night resulted in a serious pitched battle between the police and the mob. The firing of the former was more disastrous. In the fight it is stated that fully fifty persons have been wounded, many fatally. (Received August 9, 0.30 a.m.) Vienna, August 7. The Emperor Francis Joseph, of Austria, Emperer William, of Germany, and Prince Bismarck are now holding a meeting at Gastein. The absence of the Czar of Russia from the meeting is generally regarded as an indication that the triple alliance has been broken. [special to press association.] London, August 3. The Russian Press advocates an alliance with France, and the Paris " Figaro" states the Government are considering the possibility of an early mneting between M. De Freycinet, the French Premier, and M. De Giers, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs. An agitation threatening separation is on foot in Catalonia, a province in the north-east of Spain, as a proteat against the Anglo-Spanish treaty, and threatens to culminate seriously. Eighty-one thousand persons visited the Exhibition yesterday. The Canadian officials disbelieve the statements received from Labrador respecting the straits of the inhabitants, and refuse to send assistance. August 5. The American Senate has postponed the Extradition Bill until the December session. Mr Henry Matthews, who accepted the portfolio of Secretary of State for the Home Department in the Salisbury Cabinet, has been re-elected unopposed. The Irish Land League has boycotted a branch of rhe Irish Northern Railway because their nominee was not selected as an inspector on the line. Baron Maklay denies that his scheme for sending emigrants to New Guinea was only for engaging servants. The Marquis of Salisbury has promised to subsidise a line of steamers from Vancouver Island to Sydney.
