Anderson, Ziegler, Killeen, Fitzsi.nons, Jorgeusen, Mulvihill, Maloney, M'llroy, and Olden. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The outward correspondence was read and approved of. The inward correspondence was read and received, and considered. Letters from the Treasury, enclosing voucher for gold duty, and from the Bank of ISlew Zealand, re gold purchased, were received. Letter from the Staudard Insurance C >mpuny, notifying expiration of insurance on Town Hall—lt was resolved that the policy of £250, at £3 per centum, be renewed. The Town Clerk reported the price of bone dust to be as follows:—L. Kirwin, £lO per ton; Griffen and Smith, £11; Walter Stn-illbone, £lo. It was resolved that two tons be procured at the lowest price obtainable. PUBMC WORKS. The Town Clerk read the Public Works Committee's report, as follows: "Present-Or. ZiegW (Chairman),

Ors. Jorgensen, Killeen, and the Mayor. " The Committee beg to report that the day-labour man having been instructed to examine the grubbing on sections 3 and 4 on the Borough Reserve, stated that the work, had been done in a very unsatisfactory manner. The Committee, to satisfy themselves, visited the ground, and now recommend that a number of men be put on at the contractor's expense, to get the work finished, of which due notice has been given to the contractors; and also, that the Chairman has been authoeised to have a shed erected for the storage of lime, &c., 10ft. by 12ft., and 9ft. high in front." Contractor Qny here stepped forward, presented an account, and demanded payment. The Mayor, as one of the Public Works Committee, reported that the sections referred to in the report had been left in a most disgraceful state; and the sooner the Council put the ground in order the better, and he moved that the Public Works Committe be instructed to put on five or six men to finish the work in a creditable manner. Cr. Jorgensen seconded the motion ; but, in so doing, suggested that the day-labour man be taken off the work, as he thought the day-labour man had plenty to do in town. Cr, Mulvihill said he would like to hear the specifications read. The Town Clerk then read the specifications for grubbing contract, sections 3 and 4. Cr. Mulvihill said he had been down to the Reserve, and he found a very large number of stumps on the sections referred to with not three inches of soil covering them, aud the ground was not fit to put a plough in, as required by the specifications. The work was not done according to the specifications. Cr. Killeen also stated that the ground was not well broken. He would like to give the men a chance of doing tho work properly themselves. It was too bad to jump on the men. He would move this course as an amendment. The amendmont was not secouded; but at the suggestion of one of the councillors, Mr Quy, the contractor, was allowed to make a statement. Mr Quy said the Public Works Committee came down to the Reserve on the 7th July, and expressed themselves as perfectly satisfied with the work done. The Chairman asked Quy if he was agreeable to assist in completing the contract. # Mr Quy replied that he had finished his contract, and wanted payment. The motion that the report be received and adopted was then put and carried. TENDERS. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. M'llroy, the Council adjourned for twenty minutes (to consider tenders in Committee), with leave to sit agaiu. On the Council resuming, The Town Clerk read the report of the Council in Committee to consider tenders for the Boundary road as follows:—"The Committee recommend that the tender of John Garvin, being the lowest, be accepted." The report was received and adopted, and the tender of Mr John Garvin accepted accordingly. Cr. Anderson called the attention of the Council to the state of the Fifth street track to the tramway. This concluded the business of the Council.
