Sailed, this afternoon, the Union steamship Manapouri, for the Bluff. (Received August 5, 1 p.ra.) August 5. The Government Resident at Derby reports, under date, July 26, that all at Kimberley are getting gold, and that experienced miners consider the prospects favourable. Much gold is understood to be in the diggers’ hands. ♦ LOST m THE BUSH.—A HORRIBLE MUTILATION. RECONSTITUTION OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC HIERARCHY. QUEENSLAND CENSUS RETURNS. [united press association.] [Per s.s. Rotomahana, at the Bluff.] Melbourne, July 27. On Friday, 6'h inst., a child about three years of age, daughter of a selector named Collins, of Glenarona, near Kilmore, strayed away from her parents’ house. The child was not missed until the evening, when search was made in the immediate neighbourhood, but without avai'. The search was continued vigorously during Saturday and Sunday, but without any trace of the wanderer being discovered. On Monday the services of the black trackers were obtaincd, and with the aid of these and about 100 neighbours and friends, the whole country has been searched. The search was unsuccessful until Saturday, :31th inst., when the body was discovered in a horribly mutilated condition, about two miles from her parents’ house. The poor child had ovidtntly been dead some days, the hands, face, and other exposed parts being oaten away by crows.
Sydney, July 28. A fire broke out on Saturday night aboard the barque Hertfordshire, recently from New Zealand, with a cargo of grain. The vessel was slighly damaged, and the cargo was considerably damaged by fire and water. The cargo is insured in the New Zealand offices. The gold rush to Tan Tawangola has proved a failure. Most of the diggers have left the ground. It is understood that Cardinal Moran has concurred in a scheme for reconstituting the Roman Catholic heirarchy in Australasia, which includes ilie creation of a new see in Gippsland, anothor in Riverina, another in Northern Queensland, also the nomination of a special Bishop for the Native race in New Zealand. The project has been sent to the Vatican for approval. Adelaide, July 28. Sir Henry Loch, Governor of Victoria, with Lady Loch and family, are on a visit to Sir Wm. Robinson, and are being entertained to all kinds of festivities by the colonists. Brisbane, July 28. The census returns show the population of the colony to be 321,000 inclusive of Kanakas and Chinese, but exclusive of aboriginals, an increase of 107,500 since 1881. The population of Brisbane is 51,683, or an increase since that time of 1574.
