land Government to become domiciled in New Zealand, so as to bring the English Company, which has just taken over the New Zealand concern, under the operation of New Zealand law, and also that the company should '•nter into an agreement direct with the Government for the working of the line. New Zealand colonists at Home are watching with sympathetic amusement lie extraordinary excitement moused in southern parts of the colony by the floating of the New Zealand Midland Railway Company. The whole of the »hare capital of £250,000 has been sub--cribed and allotted. The shares are all firmly held, and though numerous inquiries are being made for thorn, 'here are none available for sale. Two pounds have already been paid upon ■lie £lO shares, and a quotation will shortly be applied for on the Stock' Exchange. Messrs Carruthers and Wilson will l.e the engineers of the company, and a member of the firm will go out to New Zealand when the work? has progressed to some extent, A contract for the first thirty miles of the line has been practically concluded, but not yet signed, Mess-s M'Keone and Robinson, of 5, Westminster Chambers, being the recipients of the same. These are a firm of eminent railway contractors who have done a good deal of work in Sweden, Norway, Germany, and on the Continent geuerally, and they are now completing some extensive contracts in Ireland. They are a well-known and respected firm, and have the reputation of always finishing their work up to time. They are now revising the specifications preparatory to finally concluding the contract.
