The ordinary meeting of the Hospital Trustees was held in the Town Hall last evening. It being known that the Trustees contemplate building a residence for the Surgeon-Superintendent on the Hospital Reserve, several offers were sent in to the Trustees of buildings already erected; these were—from Mr M. Wall, house, Main street, £l6O ; Mr Keech (Dr. Davy's late residence), £250; Mr T. Davidson, house (late Killeen's Tramway Hotel), Main street, £l5O ; Mr Seddon, house (Mr Evison's late residence), cheap. The consideration of these letters was deferred till Thursday evening, till which clay the meeting was adjourned. Accounts to the amount of £147 lGs 6d were passed for payment. The receipts were £B3 Is. A fuller report of the meeting will be given in to-morrow's issue. The funeral of the late Michael Brosnan took place this afternoon, at which there were a large number of followers. The Christchurch coach arrived this afternoon, at the usual hour. Commander Edwin wired at 1.30 p.m. to-day :—"Bad weather may be expected after 12 hours from now between southeast and south and west; glass rise soon, and much colder weather." With reference to the steamer Triumph which was reported in a cablegram from Melbourne yesterday afternoon to have arrived at Derby, on the 24th July, after a passage of eighteen days from Lyttelton and Wellington, with passengers from Kumara, all well, Mr C. W. Turner has received a cablegram from King George's Sound, saying that the Triumph sailed again for Newcastle and Lyttelton on Friday, July 30th. The death is announced, in the Nelson Evening Mail, of Mr John Pratt, butcher, which took place on Thursday last, 29th ult., from inflammation of the lungs. Mr Pratt was a very old resident in Nelson, having arrived there in the ship Creswell in 1850. He was a member of the Masonic and of the Foresters' Orders, and by the brethrcu of both he will be greatly missed. He leaves a widow and eight children. His age was 52. We (Auckland Herald) learn that Mr M'Rae, of Wairoa, has resolved to make a fresh start in life in the hot lake district, and has leased the Palace Hotel at Ohinemutu, from Mr Kelly. He was to enter into possession on the Ist of August, and will make several alterations and improvements in the hotel and grounds prior to the rush of tourists which is expected to set in during the spring. A new bath house is to be erected, tennis ground formed, and other attractions provided. So far the Government have done nothing in the way of compensating Mr M'Rae for the loss of his goods through the rescue party having been turned back by Dr. Hector, but it is anticipated that some small vote will be asked for prior to the closing of the Assembly. We feel sure that everyone in the colony will wish Mr M'Rae success in his new start in life, after the fearful ordeal that he has recently passed through. A strangely deformed infant has been born alive in Newcastle, Now South Wales. It has a foot on the left arm, the right arm being contracted and reflected over the shoulder, and the hand having two fingers deformed. The are iiluiped naturally, but one foot has eight foes, which are webbed together, and the other foot has live webbed toes. * Bell's Life in London, the oldest sporting paper in the world, lias been discontinued, after a chequered existence of Gt years. It was founded in 1822, by .John Bill, subsequently proprietor of Bell's Weekly Messenger. Latterly Bull's Life has been issued as a daily, which seems to Lave hastened its ruin. There were already three sporting dialies in England, namely, the Sporhman, the SportiiK' <°r:-,L, a! ..1:V,. V.rtin; L!f ; . ',-;, tiie last h)Oii;i >::-<! the property of the Duke of Bedford. Its last isuse contains farewell words explaining the vicissitudes it has gone through of late years, and why it was found impossible to continue the struggle any longer. Bell's Life, at one period, was looked forward to with delight by all sporting men, both at Home and abroad. It had an immense influence in its palmy days, but its rivals have proved too strong for the old journal, though its final collapse was somewhat sudden and unexpected. Messrs W. J. M'llroy and Co. announce the receipt of a well-assorted stock of garden and agricultural seeds, and seed potatoes of various kinds, some of which are mentioned in their advertisement on the next page. Messrs H. Goulston and Co. beg to draw the attention of the public to the sales by Dutch auction of the balance of their stock of drapery and clothing, on Friday and Saturday nights, commencing at 7 o'clock sharp. This being a positive unreserved sale, customers will be able to get goods regardless of cost.—[Advt.J Good Resolutions.—At the commencement of every new year hundreds and thousands of our young men—aud old as well—form resolutions for their guidance for the coming year. Many keep them, while others break them. To such we wish to give a word of advice. In order to sustain your determination of leading a better life in the future you should use Hop Bitters. The judicious use of Hop Bitters strengthens, cleanses, and purifies the stomach, bowels, blood, liver, nerves, and kidneys, and is just what you want to build up and invigorate yourself.—Greenbush, U.S.A., Dem.
