[UNITED I'll ESS ASSOCIATION. 1 Christchurch, July 14. The Caledonian Society have resolved to offer their St. Andrew's cross for bravery to Mr M'Rhp, of Wairoa, for his exertions in saving life during the recent eruptions in the North Island. The barque Onyx sailed from Lyttelton to-day for Cambridge Gulf, taking twelve passengers for the Kimberley goldfields. The extraordinary case in which W. P. Messenger has instituted a prosecution against his wife for stealing his goods came on again at the Resident Magistrate's Court to day. Mr Beetham, considering the circumstances of the case, that the husband had recently been brought back from Australia on a charge of wife desertion, which it had been deemed expedient not to go on ' with because his wife could not legally give evidence against him, positively declined to issue a warrant for the apprehension of Mrs Messenger, who is in Auckland, and told the informant that he conld apply to the Supreme Court for a mandamus if he liked. Dtjnedin, July 15. A fatal accident occurred on the Central this morning, when a man named Charles Nixon was killed by jumping off a truck to put on the brake. He appears to have slipped and the loaded truck passed over him. He is believed to be a widower without a a family. "Wellington, July 15. The natives have expressed their fixed determination to start ploughing shortly on land in European occupation. They say they have clear instructions from Te Whiti to do so. There is keen dissatisfaction among them concerning the management of their reserves, and they threaten to take proceedings with the intention of calling attention to it.
