features, which were bitherto puzzling to the geologists."

VOLOANIO DUST. Professor Black, in conjunction with Mr Fenton, has completed an analysis of the dust thrown up by the recent volcanic eruptions in the North Island, and (the Dunedin Herald of the 29tli ult. states) forwarded his report to the Minister of Mines on Saturday 26th ult. The sample submitteJ to examination in the University laboratory, Dunedin, was collected on the doorstep of the Bank of New Zealand at Tauranga, forty miles distant from the Tarawera volcano. It forms a most interesting object under the microscope. The following is the report:— RESULT OP ANALYSIS. Silica 62.2 Alumina 14.2 Higher oxide of iron ... 6.2 Lower oxide of iron ... 2.3 Ox. manganese ... ... traces Lime 8.7 Magnesia 0.4 Soda 1.5 Potash 0.9 Com. phosphoric acid ... 0.04 Con. sulphuric acid ... 0.08 Com. chlorine ... ... 0.1 Com. carbouic acid ... 0.3 Organic matter 2.4 Moisture 0.4 Loss 0.28 100 REMARKS. More than 20 per cent, is finely broken sharp quartz. The proportion of phosphoric acid is very low. The lime is nearly all combined as silicate, and is therefore insoluble in water, and but slowly available for plant nourishment. The dust is of little or no value as top-dressing material, aud would indeed make a but very indifferent soil. It might, however, benefit heavy clay lands by opening them up. It would also, from its state of fine division rapidly yield up the soluble salts contained in it, and thus be of some slight benefit to the first crop or or two, but would not add materially to the permanent quality of the land.
