In the Legislative Assembly to-day, the Premier, Sir Patiick Jennings, made an announcement respecting the reported French occupation of the New Hebrides. In the course of his remarks he stated that the Government of New South Wales had forwarded, through the Agent-General for the Colony, a protest against any abrogation of the treaty between England and France in reference to ihe New Hebrides. The Tariff Bill is being discussed at public meetings called by the supporters of the measure, and also by those opposing. Resolutions have been passed for and against the Government tariff proposals at the respective meetings. Melbourne, June 17. Arrived, this morning, the Union Company’s steamship Rotomabaua. (Received June 18, 1 p.m.) June 18. The Address-in-Reply to the Governor’s speech has been voted in Parliament. Reports to hand from the Northern Territory prove that the best route to Kimberley goldfield is by way of Cambridge Gulf. Th ree hundred men are now at Port Derby, and are unable to proceed to Kimberley owing to want of water.
