By a question in the House yesterday, Mr Seddon brought under the notice of the Government the conduct of Dr. Davy in refusing to see the late Peter Smith, at the Kumara Hospital. Dr. M'Brearty, M.L., F.P.S.G., who on Tuesday evening last was appointed Surgeon-superintendent to the Kumara Hospital, forwarded a large number of testimonials as to his qualifications, which, it is almost needless to say, are of a most satisfactory character. He has been in the district he now resides in for seventeen years, and during that period acted as Medical Officer to the M.U.1.0.0.F. and A.0.P., and is now and has been for the last four years Surgeon to the workers on the Otago Central Railway line, as well as being Public Vaccinator for the West Taieri district. He is a member of the New Zealand Medical Association, and also a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand. The telegram of sympathy forwarded to Mr Gladstone a few days ago by members of our Legislature originated with Mr O’Oonor, M.H.R. The s.s. Wairarapa, while passing through the Bay of Plenty on Friday last, and 80 miles from the centre of eruption, was covered with a thin coating of pumice dust. The Kumara quadrille club will hold their usual weekly assembly at the Adelphi Theatre, to-morrow evening, at eight o’clock. Mr J. F. Wilson, dentist, left for Hokitika to-day, and will make another visit here in about a week.
