PARLIAMENTARY.
THE KERMADEO ISLANDS. MUNCIPAL CORPORATIONS BILL. NOMINATED SYSTEM OP ELECTING AUDITORS. GENERAL RATES. [from our own correspondent,] Wellington, June 16. Parliamentary matters political are exceedingly quiet. The Legislative Council passed a resolution yesterday praying her Majesty to annex the Kermadec Islands to New Zealand. The House of Representatives yesterday went through the Muncipal Corporations Act. On the question of elective or nominated, auditors, opinions varied. Of the West Coast members, Messrs O’Conor, Menteatb, Guinness, and Bevan favoured the nominated system; Mr Seddon supported the law as at present; he said it was better to trust the ratepayers than to permit members of Parliament to get their friends nominated to lucky positions. The nominated system was carried by 9 votes. This means that to comply with the Act and to have the halfyearly and yearly credits and balancesheets that some fitby auditors will require to be appointed. They are to be paid out of the funds of the boroughs, but to be controlled by Government. The power to levy a general rate of fifteen-pence in lieu of one shilling was carried by 35 votes to 34. The bill was then reported. Twenty-two clauses of the Counties Bill were then carried, and The House adjourned, after having done seven hours’ solid work.
