BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening; present—His Worship the Mayor (H. Burger, Esq.), Councillors Anderson, Killeen, M'llroy, and Jorgensen. The' minutes of previous meetiugs were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was approved of, and the inward correspondence read and received, and considered. BOUNDARY TRACK. The following resolution, agreed to at the May meeting of the Westland County Council, was read and received, with the request that the Borough Council would forward its views thereon to Westland County Council at its earliest convenience:— That plans and specifications be prepared by the County Engineer for the forming and widening of the boundary road from Seddon street to Sellars house. That after the said plans and specifications are prepared, the Borough Council of Kumara be requested to call for tenders for the work in accordance •with the said plans and specifications, this Council defraying half the cost, or, in the event of the said Borough Council preferring, the Council to get the work done, that tenders be called conditionally on the Borough Council at Kumara defraying half the cost in terms of the Municipal Corporation and Counties Acts, 1876. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Jorgensen, it was resolved that the Council reply to the letter on receiving the plans and specifications. RAILWAY AGITATION. The following telegrams on the subject of railway connection with Kumara, and the late public meeting thereon were read and received : To his Worship the Mayor, Kumara. Extremely gratified to find you have taken action re getting Kumara connected with the Greyroouth-Hokitika line, and with the East and West Coast line, via Rocky Point. Being present in the Council Chamber when the matter was discussed, you can let | public of Kumara know how unfairly I the matter was debated, and how selfishly some of the members acted. I strongly advise a detour of the Grey-mouth-Hokitika line commencing at the Teremakau, thence in a south-easterly direction to Kumara; from Kumara in a south-westerly di'oction to the Beach again, leaving the engineers to find the best route. Then, as to connection with the East and West Coast Railway, request Government to make provision for a branch line from Rocky Point, or from the nearest and most practicable point to connect with the same. Ask for a survey at once, so as to decide which is the best way to connect. Surveyor Lord some time ago stated that from the configuration of the country, the north side of the Teremakau was the best, crossng at the Gorge just about thw sand hills. I wish you every success iu the move-

merit. The Minister of Public Works is making inquiries. R. J. Seddon. "Wellington, June 1, 1886. To Henry Burger, Esq., Mayor, Kumara. The public meeting at Kumara has been of great assistance. I have brought the matter prominently under the notice of members. The resolutions passed that the loop to Kumara and branch ftom East and West Coast line makes Hokitika nearer from the junction than Greymouth. Nothing on my part shall be left undone in giving effect to the wishes of Kumara people. R. J. Seddon. Wellington, June 10, 1886. ANNUAL ESTIMATES. The Town Clerk laid on the table the annual Estimates of Receipts and Ex- j penditure, which were adopted, and, on I the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Or. Anderson, it was ordered that thoy be publicly notified, in accordance with the Act. PUBLIC WORKS REPORT The Town Clerk read the Public Works Committee's Report, as follows •' Present: Crs. Ziegler (Chairman), Killeen, Fitzsimons, Jorgensen, and the Mayor. The Committee resolved to recommend— 1. That the amount of 25 per cent, on contract No. 1, Borough Reserve, J. Cairns, be held over until the next ordinary finance meeting, to enable the Public Works Committee to fully examine the work. 2. That the Council have specifications prepared for the several culverts on the Borough Reserve. 3. That the attention of the Inspector be called to the frequent complaints of stray cattle and goats within the borough, and that immediate steps be taken to abate the nuisance. The report was received, the clauses considered seriatim, and adopted as read. This concluded the business of the meeting.
