CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The ordinary meeting of the Westland Hospitals and Charitable Aid Board was held in the County Council Chambers, Hokifcika, on Tuesday, at 3 p.m.; present—The Chairman (jff. Michel, Esq.) Messrs Grimmond, Burie\; and Jack. From our exchanges we glean the following parliculaVof business affecting this part of the district. carlstrom's case. Letter from the Kumara Benevolent Society with reference to a man named Andrew Carlstrom, who had been sent 'o Rotorua, and who was now left destitute on account of the society having ceased to exist, and the payments consequently stopped; also a letter from Andrew Carlstrom himself. Received. Mr Burger said the man had been found incurable, and as a last resource had been advised to try the hot springs. All the money which had been collected for that purpose was now exhausted. He thought that his friends might raise £SO, and pay it into the Board. The matter was referred to the Benevolent Committee at Kuoiara to report, as the Board recognised that they could make no levy to meet the case. KUMARA BENEVOLENT SOCIETY. From Mr Burger re the property of tho Benevolent Society, stating that estimates would be forwarded shortly to the Board, and giving the names of the members of the new Benevolent Committee, viz:—Messrs Dungan, Rudkiu, Barrell, Olden, Burger, Nicholson, and Henne.—Received. Mr Burger said that he had dealt with a few small cases, as requested hy the Board. On the motion of Mr Grimmond, seconded by Mr Burger, the gentlemen refennd to above were confirmed in, their appointments.
HOKITIKA HOSPITAL. From the Secretary of the Westland Hospital Trustees, applying for £496 28 sd, and requesting that payment be marie as soon as possible. The Chairman failed to see what they had to do with a claim which properly belonged to last year, Mr Burger asked if the Trustees bad put this amount down as an asset, because if they had, the Board would not be-compelled to pay it. The letter also pointed out that ihe Government had refused to grant the trustees the subsidy, which wo\ild leave them £9OO short, and pointing out the urgency of the case. The Chairman said he should be inclined to vote one quarter of the amount. On April 3rd the Board had voted the hospital £3OO, which was a third of the £9OO, the total amount voted. It wou'd be necessary to state the case plainly to the hospital trustees, and inform them that the Board could only go to the length which they had decided upon some time since. Mr Cuddeford had also made a mistake in his estimates, as he was asking practically for the amount which should be provided by the Government. Mr Grimmond said it would be best to grant a sum which would just carry them on to September. He moved that £175 be voted to the hospital trustees, this was the amount due up to the end of September next. Seconded by Mr Burger and carried. FINANCES. Accounts to the amount of £73 were passed for payment. Some discussion ensued over Di. M'Leod's drug accouut. a Eventually it was decided to write and request the doctor to forward particulars of the account, and a statement showing how he arrived at such exorbitant charges. The receipts since last meeting amounted to £291 10s Id; expenditure, £l6B 15s 3d; balance in bank, £424 ss.
