BOARD OF EDUCATION.
+ . The Westlancl Board of Education met in the County Chambers, Hokitika, on Tuesday, at 8 p.m.; present—Mr M'Whirter (in the chair), Messrs Rose, Grimmond, Rae, and Jack. The Times reports as follows in Reference to matters affecting this part of the district: — The minutes of the previous ordinary and of a special meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence approved of. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Education Department, notifying remittance of £497 18s 4d, May grant. From same, stating paintiug, <&c, of old buildings must not come out of building vote. —Received; resolved th a t Minister be informed capitation grant is not sufficient to repair buildings. From same, re scholarship grant, stating previous amount to credit not being fully required was no longer to Board's credit, and the present grant would only be Is 6d per head.—Received, the Secretary to reply. From Kumava Committee, enclosing letter from headmaster re repairs.— Received. From Arahura Road Committee approving Mr Seddon's motion re sewing mistress.—Received. From Stafford Committee, asking if land be set aside for teacher's residence, and asking for grant for vesidence.— Received, to be considered wilh building vote. From Goldborough, asking for grant for small requisites.—Received, request granted. From M, Morris, Goldsborough, forwarding cash book, and drawing attention to deficiency in accounts of a former treasurer.—Received ; resolved that the cash book be sent to the Goldsborough Committee, and they be asked to have a balance-sheet prepared for 1885. Letters from the various committees with reference to the appointment of special sewing mistresses and postponement of holidays, were received. In the former four were favorable and three against. It was decided to let the matter of postponing the holidays be left to the option of the teachers.— No actiou was taken in reference to special sewing mistresses. From school teacher Rangiriri, saying that the chimney had been blown down.—Received; resolved that it be re-erected. From Mr M'Kenzie, Lake Brunner School, enclosing a letter from residents terminating his appointment, and asking if the residents have this power. Received; resolved that Mr M'Kenzie be informed can take no action. From Secretary of Teachers' Association, enclosiug copy of rules.—Received. REPORT. From Inspector, re Luke Brunner School, and stating that tva it was the
I first examination he could not express any opinion on the teacher's ability.— Eoceived. pupil teacher's examinations. The Secretary and Inspector brought before the Board the desirability of adopting a rule of the old Board that a bonus of £lO be given to head teacheis whose pupil teachers obtain an E certificate within two years from date of passing first class pupil teachers' examination.—The matter was ordered to stand over. The Secretary and Inspector asked the Board to. arrange for the examination of all the pupil teachers at Hokitika at one time during the holidays, and that the actual expenses of pupil teachers be defrayed.—Mr Rae moved that the Inspector make arrangements as suggested, coach fare and 30s be allowed to pupil teachers coming from the country.—Carried. Consideration of building vote was postponed till this day week. The Board then adjourned.
