FIRE AT MAORI CREEK.

A disastrous fire started at four o’clock on Sunday morning in M‘Kechnie’s Hotel and store, Maori Creek. By the time the alarm was given (the Argus reports) the whole place seemed to be in flames, and Mr and Mrs M'Kechnie and family only escaped through the windows. M'Phee’s store, which is situated next door, was also burned, the inmates barely escaping with their lives. On the near side the fire was prevented from doing further damage by the removal of a blacksmith’s shop. So far as we can learn nothing was saved of either M‘Kechnie’s or M'Phee’s stock, M l Kechnie is said to be insured for for about a third of the value of the property destroyed, but M'Phee was uninsured. The fire is supposed to have originated in M'Kechnie's billiard room. The utmost sympathy is felt for Mr M'Kechnie and Mr M‘Phee.
