The captain and officers of the Russian warship were entertained at dinner to day by the Wellington Club. Gisborne, May 30. A meeting of the County Council was held yesterday to decide what course should be taken to recover money detained by Willoughby Brassey, solicitor, who was recently dismissed from the Council’s service. The amount is £lsl, paid to him on May 10 on account of rates. Brassey cashed the cheque on May 11. A demand was made for the money held by Brassey, it is alleged, for his costs. He gave a cheque, but said there was not sufficient in the bank to meet it, as the clerk was away with the keys of the safe. The Council decided that unless the money was paid by noon on Monday, criminal proceedings would be taken.
