WESTLAND COUNTY WORKS

From the Westland County Engineer's report, read at the last meeting of the Council we extract the following of interest to residents in this riding:— Contracts.—The contractors of the various works in hand are getting ou as well as can be expected considering the past unfavourable weather. During the month, two contracts have been completed and passed, viz., the Goldsborough protective works, and Kokatahi road extension. Both of these works have been constructed in a satisfactory manner. I expect the Dillman's-Chtistchurch road widening contract, sections 4, 5 and 6 will be finished by the end of this month. Arahura Protective Works.—These works are almost completed. There are now only a few men employed finishing up. All the new part of the bridge has been tarred, and also a portion of the old. I intended to have given it a coat of tar throughout, bnt as the timber is not sufficiently dry at this time of the year, I have given instructions to stop the work for the present. Drainage and other Improvements at Dillman's.—Since these improvements were commenced (ou the 12th of last month) several beneficial works have been done by the three men employed. The creek running paiallel with the main street at the back of the buildings has been cleared out, and all the obstructions to the flow of the water removed. A new culvert has been constructed over this creek where it crosses the road leading to Larrikins, and the open portion of the Government water-race, opposite Mr Foldi's store, covered with logs and gravel'ed * over. The works aheady done have greatly improved the street, and also the sanitary condition of the township. Crate Protective Works, Goldsborough.—l have surveyed and prepared plans for 3 chains 37 links of log cribbing on the southern side of the creek at the back of the Camp reserve, and estimate the work will cost about £7O.
